What does "double-goer" mean in the etymology explanation of doppelganger?

1830, from Ger. Doppelg盲nger, lit. "double-goer," originally with a ghostly sense. See double + gang. Sometimes half-Anglicized as doubleganger.

and what does "double+gang" mean????What does "double-goer" mean in the etymology explanation of doppelganger?
Well, if a ghost of you existed in the world at the same time that you existed, and it looked just like you, it would be like two of you were "going around" in the world. The ghost would be your double. I believe that this (a ghost of someone being present in the world) was the orginal meaning of doppelanger. As you have said, doppelanger is the German for "double-goer"

"double+gang" just means that people have mixed the English translation of "doppel" with the original German word "gang", which must mean "go."
