I know that in literature, it is mostly represent as evil. But, if I was to use it as a self-reflection in my personal essay, would it work?|||It's true that in literature and folklore a doppelganger usually represents evil. In contemporary usage, however, a doppelganger is a "look-alike."
If you planned to use it in your essay to say you physically looked like someone, like a celebrity or other famous person, then I'd say "go ahead".
Any other usage, to me, carries a supernatural or dark connotation.
