Doppelganger Theme in The Sign Of Four- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle?

I am taking a Doppelganger and Doubles class and in this class I have to write a paper that relates to the doppelganger theme in this story. However after reading this story twice and doing some research, I still could not find the doppelganger theme in this story. Any theories, suggestions or pointing in the right direction would be appreciated.|||It's been so long since I read the story %26amp; have forgotten names of characters, etc.

However, the theme may be underscoring many characters in this story, not least Holmes himself [altho' in reverse order ;-) ] - how his drug-taking makes him more human %26amp; humane !

The main culprit or perpetrator of the present crime(s) is probably the Doppelganger here. How he has changed from the genial, brave, law-abiding, upright soldier of the East India Company to the present decrepit, unrecognizable, vengeful, almost evil person. How betrayal could lead to such a change of character %26amp; personality - both physical %26amp; mental.

That is all I remember for now.

I'll look up the story again tomorrow %26amp; come back with more details.

Hope this helps for now.

All the very best :-)
